Our mission is to continually provide innovative ways to help a child learn to read. Reading is the backbone of all education. When children master reading and gain enjoyment of this powerful skill, they have built a foundation on which they can learn any subject. When you have learned to read, you are empowered to explore any subject your mind chooses. Our mission is to give children the gift of a successful reading learning experience. Whether it is via books, puzzles, software, or tutoring, Spanish Learning Center, Inc. continues to encourage children to discover the greatness of the world reading can open. This is how the Cometa Reading Program began.

Founder Alma Valdes, has had a passion for Spanish reading techniques and strategies since the mid 1970’s. As the owner of eight private schools in Mexico, she developed and implemented several complete Spanish reading programs throughout her career finding great success with her methodologies.

Once in the U.S., she discovered that Hispanic children in their early school years had very little reading support in Spanish. She quickly realized that deficiency in a new language comes from deficiency in fundamental skills in the native tongue, and to the benefit of many Hispanic children, that became her focus. Alma Valdes contends that “teaching Spanish reading in the United States is not the same as teaching it in Spanish speaking countries. Teachers need effective methods to help students accelerate the transition from Spanish to English reading”.

Through consulting and tutoring programs in the Chicago area, Mrs. Valdes decided to answer the tremendous need to create a practical and effective Spanish reading program. Today, she provides educational consulting, tutoring and trainings from individuals to whole school districts with the goal to make Spanish reading an enjoyable and necessary step for Hispanic children to succeed in their academic life in the United States.
